The ultra-high-pressure integrated cementing head deployed in this operation is core equipment tailor-developed by Sunshine Petroleum for high-pressure working conditions in ultra-deep well construction. During field operation, the equipment withstood continuous high-pressure loading stably without any leakage or malfunction. It efficiently coordinated with the on-site operating procedures and gained unanimous recognition from the project team.
✅ Technical Breakthroughs: Solving High-Pressure Cementing Pain Points from the Source
As oil and gas exploration extends to ultra-deep formations, the high-pressure and high-risk operating conditions of ultra-deep wells impose extremely stringent requirements on the pressure bearing capacity and reliability of cementing equipment. Traditional welded cementing heads are prone to weld cracking and seal failure, which have become critical bottlenecks restricting construction safety.
Through persistent technical research, the R&D team of Sunshine Petroleum has achieved multiple key breakthroughs with this newly developed cementing head:
Non-welded integrated structure: The integral structure eliminates all welding joints, completely avoiding stress concentration and weld failure risks, with a leading industry maximum pressure bearing capacity of 140 MPa.
High-reliability sealing design: All hammer union ports adopt a thread plus anti-loosening ring structure, achieving zero leakage under high-pressure environments.
Humanized operational design: The large plug accommodating cavity prevents negative pressure generation. The top cover is equipped with reserved spare interfaces and a plug ejector rod, together with a pin anti-rotation mechanism, comprehensively ensuring operational safety and construction efficiency.
✅ Deep Cultivation in Oil and Gas Equipment to Empower Deep Formation Development
The successful field application of this ultra-high-pressure cementing head not only verifies the technical strength and on-site adaptability of Sunshine Petroleum’s products, but also accumulates valuable engineering experience for the localization of ultra-deep well cementing equipment.
In the future, Sunshine Petroleum will continue to focus on the technical demands of deep and unconventional oil and gas development, continuously optimize product performance, and fuel the high-quality development of China’s oil and gas industry with safer, more efficient and more reliable equipment.
On June 30, 2024, Hebei Shangshan Petroleum Machinery Co., Ltd. (Sunshine Petroleum) officially signed a technology development contract with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, launching a joint research and development project on the self-diagnosis and self-healing technology of cementing engineering materials based on artificial intelligence and bionic control. With a total investment of 2.3 million RMB and a research cycle from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027, the project targets the core pain points of cementing engineering in extreme deep-earth environments. It aims to build a cutting-edge technical system integrating intelligent perception, AI diagnosis, graded self-healing and full closed-loop evaluation, supporting the high-efficiency, safe and long-term development of deep earth oil and gas resources in China.
At present, China’s oil and gas exploration and development continues to advance toward deep earth, deep formations and unconventional fields. Cement sheaths in cementing operations are constantly exposed to extreme downhole conditions, including temperatures above 150°C, pressures over 80 MPa, high salinity, and corrosive environments containing H₂S and CO₂. Such harsh conditions easily induce microcracks, interface debonding, fluid channeling and other defects. Traditional cementing technologies rely mainly on passive protection and post-fault maintenance, with inherent shortcomings such as undetectable damage, inaccurate diagnosis and delayed repair, which severely restrict long-term wellbore integrity and the service life of oil and gas wells. This university-enterprise collaborative research precisely targets the core technical bottlenecks of the industry, promoting the transformative upgrade of cementing engineering from “passive repair” to “active intelligent management and control”.
Centered on carbon nanotube conductive networks, the technology constructs a “bionic nervous system” for cementing materials, achieving four major innovative breakthroughs:
1. Integrated Self-sensing and Self-healing Bionic Perception Layer
An efficient carbon nanotube dispersion technology is developed to build a three-dimensional conductive percolation network, endowing cement stone with multi-modal perception capabilities including piezoresistive, thermoelectric and electrochemical sensing. Combined with crack-guided microcapsules, it forms the first passive repair barrier for cementing structures.
2. Integrated Wellsite and Downhole Multi-source Intelligent Perception Network
Integrating high-temperature special optical fibers and high-temperature and high-pressure array ultrasonic imaging devices, the system realizes continuous full-well monitoring of micro-vibration, micro-strain and temperature fields based on DAS/DSS/DTS technologies. Equipped with edge AI chips, it achieves sub-millimeter-level defect imaging and interpretation.
3. Physics-informed AI Intelligent Diagnosis
By embedding high-temperature and high-pressure damage mechanics into neural networks, the system can intelligently identify crack types, quantify damage degrees and locate three-dimensional defect coordinates. It triggers graded early warnings based on comprehensive safety thresholds, with a residual life prediction error of no more than 10%.
4. Bionic Graded Collaborative Self-healing Mechanism
The system responds hierarchically according to damage severity: microcracks trigger passive solidification of microcapsules; moderate damage initiates Joule thermal electrothermal repair of carbon nanotubes; severe leakage is blocked via electrochemical deposition. Automatic performance evaluation is conducted after repair, forming a complete closed-loop workflow of perception, diagnosis, decision-making, triggering, repair and assessment.
The core technical indicators of the project reach the leading level in the industry:
(1) Carbon nanotube network crack detection resolution: ≤5 μm;
(2) AI damage recognition accuracy: ≥95%;
(3) Safety early warning accuracy: ≥98%;
(4) Active repair response time: ≤60 seconds;
(5) Post-repair strength recovery rate: ≥90%;
(6) Post-repair permeability recovery rate: ≥95%;
(7) The entire system can operate stably for a long time under extreme downhole conditions of 180°C and 120 MPa, with an overall system failure rate ≤0.8 times/(100 points・year).
In accordance with the R&D plan, the project is implemented in four phases: completing material formula optimization and perception model calibration in 2024; developing core devices and finishing single-mode repair closed-loop experiments in 2025; realizing full-system integrated commissioning and high-temperature high-pressure simulation well tests in 2026; and completing patent application, thesis publication and pilot well test scheme formulation in 2027 to open up the path for technology transformation.
As the entrusting party, Hebei Shangshan Petroleum Machinery Co., Ltd. provides sufficient R&D funds and test sites for the project. As the research and development party, Shanghai Jiao Tong University leverages its disciplinary advantages in materials science, artificial intelligence and downhole measurement and control, undertaking full-process technology research, device development and system integration. Both parties agree to jointly own the patent application rights of the project, and prioritize the on-site application of technical achievements in petroleum engineering to accelerate industrialization.
This cooperation represents an in-depth integration of industry, university and research. It integrates the enterprise’s advantages in engineering application and market transformation with the university’s strengths in basic research and technological innovation. The project is expected to fill the domestic technical gap in intelligent self-diagnosis and self-healing technology for deep-earth cementing engineering, significantly improve wellbore safety guarantee capabilities, reduce workover costs and extend the service life of oil and gas wells. It provides critical technical support for the efficient development of deep earth energy and the intelligent upgrading of petroleum equipment in China, setting a new benchmark for university-enterprise collaboration to break through key “bottleneck” technologies in the industry.
